A lawyer by profession, Sonia LeBel entered the public eye as Chief Prosecutor at the Charbonneau Commission, where she became known for her thoroughness and combativeness, but also for her sense of humour. The fight against collusion and corruption is an important cause for her.

After obtaining her law degree from the University of Montreal, Sonia worked for more than 20 years with the Director of Criminal and Penal Prosecutions (DPCP), where she specialized in criminal law and offences related to drugs and organized crime. She was also a member of the offences committee of the Montreal Bar for 15 years.

Sonia LeBel entered politics in 2017, becoming Deputy Chief of Staff to François Legault. In October 2018, she was elected as the Member of the National Assembly for Champlain under the Coalition Avenir Québec banner and appointed as Minister of Justice, responsible for Canadian Relations, the Canadian Francophonie, and the Status of Women. In June 2020, Ms. LeBel was appointed as Chair of the Conseil du trésor and Minister Responsible for Government Administration, while remaining Minister Responsible for Canadian Relations and the Canadian Francophonie and Minister Responsible for Democratic Institutions, Electoral Reform and Access to Information.
